As the site of the signing of the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico, Washington on the Brazos is generally considered to be one of the three most important historic sites in Texas related to the formation of the state. The Washington on the Brazos State Park Association (WBSPA) is working to reestablish awareness of this site as central to Texas history and to the Texas "experience" with an identity that is fresh and contemporary, while honoring the past.
Dyal and Partners (now Dyal Branding & Graphics, A Page Company) created an entirely new brand and identity for the park, ensuring that they were both bold and true to the park’s roots. The identity utilizes wood-type based fonts of the historical era while imparting a freshness that may be associated with contemporary gig posters. Design elements reflect the Dodson flag that was flown at the site of the Texas Declaration of Independence signing.
Along with the new brand and identity Dyal Branding & Graphics developed the tagline “Where Texas Became Texas” to reassert the site’s importance, along with headlines such as “Between the Alamo and San Jacinto, Texas Became Texas” which seek to position the site on an equal level to these other better known sites.
All of these elements informed the experiential component of the Visitor Experience Master Plan. The project team worked with the WBSPA Board, Texas Parks & Wildlife and other stakeholders to create this substantial plan.
"(Dyal) provided the perfect spark for Washington on the Brazos to begin the process of re-defining and re-branding the Washington on the Brazos State Park Association and the celebration of Texas Independence at Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site. The Board received guidance and inspiration from the Dyal team, helping the Board to focus on the significance of our trust – to celebrate the very place where Texas became Texas. With their support we were able to focus and direct our energy toward a brand identity that we believe will rekindle the deserved reverence for this Historic Site. With this new energy, we will continue to strive to make this Site as recognizable as the Alamo and San Jacinto are in the minds of all Texans.”
