The new Horizon I building provides the University of South Carolina with a facility that supports programs in engineering and technology along with scientific research and industrial development of alternative energy sources. This project supports programs in engineering and technology along with scientific research and industrial development of alternative energy sources. The 125,000-square-foot building is designed around a central service corridor system, distributing intensive services and separating hazardous material flows from non-hazardous areas. Labs are zoned for high, medium and low service uses. Research areas include hydrogen, coal, thermal hydraulics and nuclear engineering. An incubator component on the first floor promotes private industry partnerships.
Page/SST Planners provided lab programming and planning. The architect was Watson Tate Savory.
