The U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York, sought to create a cadet centered education environment by increasing community and campus engagement and enhancing the academic and student life experiences while planning for growth. In 2016, the Page/KFS Architects team was contracted to provide facility master planning expertise as part of the Academic Building Upgrade Plan (ABUP). The ABUP study is a 15-year plan comprised of an overall space needs assessment and space accommodation and migration strategy for six facilities.
Project challenges included updating the campus environment; improving adjacencies among various units and support programs; and integrating building upgrade requirements, phasing and budgets. Project goals sought to solicit feedback from the academy and key stakeholders to establish a detailed plan for cadet support and academic life.
The plan, which was completed in January 2018, provided a detailed and tailored framework to implement cadet centered environment that supports USMA’s mission. It identified a total current space deficit of 145,000 GSF across programs and a major need for more and improved collaborative spaces such as labs and cadet support space, while outlining program accommodation, phasing strategy and budget for future growth.
Planning and program principles were provided to USMA that support best learning practices, cadet, instructor, and staff facilities, and other physical modifications to create a student centered environment. Additionally, increased security efficiencies were created because of the space moves and an improved visitor experience was recommended to take advantage of the scenic campus location.
Given USMA’s desire for more interactive pedagogy in order to remain competitive with peer institutions, we recommended a range of facility and classroom typologies that allow for a greater flexibility in teaching styles, and would include active learning classrooms that support emerging technologies, class-wide discussion and feedback, gaming and group work.
