This project will provide 490 freshman residences for the rapidly expanding student population of Texas A&M University-Commerce. Students today have different needs and interests than the generations before them. As such, this project is envisioned as a new prototype for new generations with particular emphasis on shared common space throughout the building.
Page drew upon our extensive student housing research efforts to recognize a key correlation between well-defined, evenly-distributed public space and student academic performance. Coupled with the knowledge that freshmen who make strong friendships lead to higher retention rates, Page set about conceiving a building that maximizes chance interactions and provides ample spaces for study and relaxation. Within each floor of the building, groups of dorm rooms, restrooms and living spaces are organized to form communities-within-communities to foster friendship formation.
Responding to the campus master plan, the four-story building is positioned to take advantage of the existing grade change and to capture an additional half-level at the western end of the site. The Z-shaped plan effectively creates two courtyards: the eastern courtyard is at a key junction of the primary campus circulation while the western courtyard effectively provides a place of respite. Living rooms within the floors are positioned at the corners of the building to provide superior vantages as well as serving to enliven the facades, and provide an active backdrop to the surrounding campus.
The client's goal is to develop high-quality student housing while maintaining affordability for its students. The project is scheduled to be opened for the fall semester of 2018.
