The new 71,000-square-foot Health & Life Sciences Building consolidates multiple programs devoted to the health professions and STEM disciplines while encouraging student collaboration and engagement. Shenandoah University's vision is to be nationally recognized for forward-thinking programs that create competitive and purposeful graduates.
An important project goal was to promote multi-disciplinary and interactive learning. The laboratory spaces were also designed to provide long-term flexibility to accommodate changes in use and pedagogy over time at this undergraduate liberal arts college.
Chemistry, nursing and science labs permit instructors to easily transition between group instruction to one-on-one training and observation. Page/SST Planners provided lab programming and lab planning services for the building, which was designed by Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. (ESa).
A simulation suite utilizing interactive patient mannequins provides a realistic environment to assess students’ skills, and the 16-station cadaver lab replaces an older off-campus lab with larger, more functional space.
In addition, the project brings together under one roof the chemistry and biology instructional labs and their associated support spaces.
