This project occupies the fifth floor of a pre-existing building on Town Lake in downtown Austin. The space’s panoramic views on three sides provoked a very open plan wherein views in multiple directions, up and down the river and to urban landmarks, are available from most locations.
Transparency (even through “hard wall” conference rooms) was a paramount concern. Materials and configurations of furniture and workstations were selected to emphasize this openness while providing optimum work environments for individuals and groups.
Simple black tables and partitions, frosted glass screens and classic modern furniture give the space a fresh, bright feeling. Indirect lighting is provided throughout to reduce glare on computer screens.
A “heroic” reception desk made of scagliola (an Italian Baroque plaster technique) mixes ancient craft with a modern design sensibility.
Sustainable design features include abundant day-lighting, motion activated light switches, bamboo table tops, natural fiber carpets, and low-VOC coatings.
