The client sought a dynamic and highly flexible design that would first reflect and support the brand of care offered by Modern Spine, a medical practice specializing in spinal disorders, and also could accommodate future needs. The result was a 10,000 square foot building in which the medical practice occupies one half and the other half is a shell space for potential tenants.
The light-filled waiting room features a balance of warm wood veneer and sleek, glossy materials. This combination of contemporary features and warm materials is carried out throughout the clinical and office areas with the use of wood vinyl flooring and glass walls. Clerestories in the walls allow natural light to flow into the corridors.
Patient education is promoted through the use of interactive wall displays in the exam rooms as well as through amenities such as a counseling office and educational video viewing rooms. A combination kitchen/conference room provides staff with adequate space for meetings and breaks. The television in the conference room is integrated into the modular wall assembly behind a clear glass panel that acts as a writable surface for educational presentations.
The clinic was organized around a loop corridor that promotes a smooth work flow between the administrative offices and the clinical areas. Nurse stations were designed at sit-to-stand height, enabling nursing staff to move efficiently from task to task. Six same-handed exam rooms feature sliding doors which maximize available square footage. The use of modular walls in the exam rooms allows for the integration of accessories, placing all equipment such as patient charts, diagnostic set and sharps disposal within easy reach of the care providers.
As the practice expands, the moveable, modular walls will provide the client with the ability to rearrange their office space with little to no additional construction, and within a matter of hours. This flexibility is promoted in the ‘benching’ configuration of the nurse stations, giving Modern Spine the ability to add work stations in the future. All millwork is modular as well, allowing doctors the flexibility to easily alter the arrangement or position of their cabinets.
With materials of brick, Arriscraft limestone and glass, the building was designed to reflect the client's wishes while also conforming to the building standards of the suburban community.
