The Lawrence Station Area Plan (SAP) comprises approximately 629 acres in the heart of Silicon Valley, adjacent to the Lawrence Caltrain Station located in Sunnyvale, California and bordering the City of Santa Clara. The study area is defined by a one-half mile radius circle centered on Lawrence Station.
The Lawrence SAP investigates options for maximizing the benefits to Sunnyvale that come from the presence of Caltrain and the Lawrence Station. The vision and recommendations contained in the SAP will guide future development in the area and bolster other planning efforts including the Land Use and Transportation Element (LUTE) update and future General Plan updates.
This first phase of the study included two community workshops and two business outreach meetings. The first Community Vision Workshop included a visioning effort to understand the needs and goals of residents and businesses in the area. The community identified a range of possible area improvements, showing support for improved circulation access for all modes with a focus on improved bicycle and pedestrian station access and within the study area as a whole.
A second community workshop was held to discuss alternative development scenarios and involved the presentation of three alternative concepts for the future of the study area – Residential Emphasis, Office/R&D Emphasis, and Mixed Development – as well as a proposed framework of streets and blocks.
The Mixed Development concept garnered the most support based on community input. Separate business outreach meetings addressed the needs and concerns of area businesses. These events gave the community direct access to staff and the consultant team to share ideas about existing conditions, issues, opportunities and preliminary concepts and visions for the area.
