The Frost Bank Data Center is located on a 25-acre site which has been master planned for additional bank facilities to be co-located on the campus. The 71,000-square-foot Tier III+ facility includes 20,500 square feet of raised floor area. The project has been designed to be able to migrate from an initial build-out of 100 W/sf to 240 W/sf when fully fit out. The building design allowed Frost Bank to initially fit-up a portion of the white space with administrative functions over the raised floor area. As demand for white space area increases, the administrative areas will be removed to allow the fit-up of the white space.
The data center is designed to withstand an F3 tornado event. The exterior concrete tilt-up walls are steel reinforced, 10-inch concrete panels. The steel structural frame can withstand a 206 MPH wind rating. The roof is an eight-inch thick concrete ballast over a hot asphalt membrane roofing system. The emergency generator plant and switchgear are also housed in tornado-resistant structures.
The electrical mission critical design is a 2N+1 system with N+2 emergency generator plant. The white space is supported by a multiple 750 KVA 2N+1 UPS modules with VRLA batteries. The design has been developed to allow plug-in-play modularity to increase the raised floor watts per square foot from 100 to 240 as density and power requirements increase over time. The facility is intended to have no single points of failure, and the design will ensure the facility is concurrently maintainable. The electrical systems are designed to have physical separation between the X and Y sides of the primary power (4.16 kV) distribution and generation equipment, and between the A and B sides of the 480 VAC distribution systems. Rack power is provided using either a combination of Power Distribution Units (PDU) and Starline 225 ampere busway over racks or Power Distribution Units (PDU) and Remote Power Panels (RPP) to distribute power to the racks. PDUs are a distribution type single power source and are located outside the white space, while Starline busway and RPPs are located in the white space.
The mechanical system comprises a 3N/2 air-cooled chiller system and 3N/2 chilled water pump distribution system. The white space is a single looped system with 10-inch supply and return piping. The facility has two chilled water systems: a high temperature system for the white space to increase energy efficiency for the data center and a low temperature system for the administrative areas. The chiller/pump systems will maintain the loop supply water temperature at 53 degrees F and will maintain flow capacity via a variable primary pumping system. The design features a complete looping of the white space area, thus providing flow in two directions and the ability to valve off sections of the piping for ease of future connections and/or isolate failure points without interruption of service to the building. The facility includes a water thermal storage tank for chilled water ride through.
