The new three-story facility for the College of Engineering contains classrooms, teaching labs and research space for the School of Biomedical Engineering and the departments of Environmental Engineering, Systems and Synthetic Biology, and Chemical Engineering. Five laboratory “pods” for research and teaching focus on a particular area to support these academic programs. Although these groups house their own faculty, post-docs and graduate student offices, the pod teams work in close collaboration with each other in spaces designed specifically to bring the various teams together. Other notable spaces include a computational virtual reality cave and clean room fabrication facilities.
The 122,000-square-foot building has achieved LEED Gold certification and will comply with Labs21 Environmental Performance. Page/SST Planners provided programming services for the engineering building, which was designed by SLATERPAULL|Hord Coplan Macht + RATIO.
