The Center for American Architecture and Design at the University of Texas stages national symposia and publishes CENTER: Architecture and Design in America. Each volume explores a theme in architecture with essays by noted scholars.
In 2012, the Center for American Architecture and Design engaged Dyal and Partners (now Dyal Branding & Graphics, A Page Company) to design the series’ 17th volume, Center 17: Space & Psyche. This volume explores space, light, material and form in architecture, and the overlap of psychoanalysis and architecture.
Given the nature of the book’s subject matter, the designs include a number of layered, ephemeral or gauzy images throughout the book that have a dream-like quality. Dyal Branding & Graphics worked with editor Michael Benedikt on this volume, as well as the following volume, Center 18: Music in Architecture: Architecture in Music.
Center 17 was recognized in the 2014 AIGA Texas Show exhibit, placing second in the Publications category of the design competition. It was also recognized in the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Awards Results, winning Bronze for the National Architecture category.
"The Center for American Architecture and Design (CAAD) has worked with Dyal and Partners for many years, principal-to-principal, as well as staff-to-staff, and every combination thereof. CAAD's latest commission was to design volume 17 of its award-winning book series CENTER: Architecture and Design in America. CENTER 17: Space & Psyche (2012, 240 pages) is a triumph of design: it is dense with pictorial and textual content and yet eminently clear; it is creative (there's no other book like it) and traditional; it is original and yet consistent with the style and feel of earlier volumes. Dyal and Partners worked through complex problems with us with perfect equanimity, patience, creativity, and professionalism. And they did it on budget. Among graphic design firms in Austin--and nationally--Dyal and Partners stands tall. It is a 'class operation.'"
