This project provided Bryn Athyn College with a new 39,000-square-foot academic science building which supports the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences. Doering Center features both dry and wet teaching and research laboratories, all of which were designed to be adaptable for interdisciplinary teaching as well as to accommodate changes in pedagogy. A large multi-disciplinary research lab located on the second floor accommodates keystone projects in collaboration with nearby Fox Chase Cancer Center.
One key goal was to ensure transparency throughout the building, and even the labs were designed with this in mind. The lab planning team strategically placed chemical prep rooms between two labs, thus solving a potentially challenging adjacency issue. Fume hoods are located along interior common walls to maintain exterior views to the rural Pennsylvania landscape, as well as views into the light-filled, three-story atrium. When privacy or a darker room environment is preferred, wood-clad whiteboards can slide across the window wall.
Page/SST Planners provided lab programming and lab planning services for the LEED Gold certified building which was designed by Spillman Farmer Architects.
