In 2012, The Belo Center for New Media became the newest addition to the Moody College of Communication at UT Austin. Dyal and Partners (now Dyal Branding & Graphics, A Page Company) was engaged by project architect Lawrence Group to develop environmental graphic design, wayfinding and signage for the exterior and interior as well as donor recognition elements for the five-story, 100,000-square-foot building.
The Belo Corporation is a storied Texas institution that started as a newspaper company in 1842 and founded Texas’ oldest newspaper. The team’s designs feature elements that pay tribute to the Belo Family and their legacy, while reinforcing timeless journalistic attributes. Additionally, we designed an exhibition in the building that honors alumni and staff who have received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. All building identification and donor pieces echo hot metal composition racks and type.
The honorific piece, a specialty interior design element, recognizes third generation Belo Corporation leaders Joe M. Dealy, H. Ben Decher and James M. Moroney Jr. The display features a vintage photograph reproduced as a large newspaper-style metal plate photo and bronze signage that recalls newspaper hot-metal type to reinforce the overall design concept.
"Throughout Lawrence Group's 4 year process of creating and delivering UT Austin's recently completed Belo Center for New Media and KUT's Public Media Studios, Herman Dyal and his team never ceased to amaze me with their collaborative process and creative solutions; from building signage, to way-finding to one of a kind, highly customized donor honorifics, Herman's contributions to Belo have been significant and timeless. Lawrence Group looks forward to our next collaboration with Dyal and Partners."
