Baylor Medical Center at Uptown focuses on surgical, orthopedic, neuroscience, bariatric and pain management services. The 63,000-square-foot, LEED Silver certified facility is the first hospital built under the Dallas Green Building Ordinance. Constructed on the site of the former Mary Shiels Hospital, Baylor Uptown includes six operating rooms, a pain management procedure room, twenty-four private patient rooms, emergency treatment services and an imaging center with MRI, RAD and CT technologies. The existing 1970s Mary Shiels Hospital was demolished in order to build the new hospital.
The urban hospital’s triangular footprint and tight site presented design challenges for site access, public and emergency entrances and required parking. The solution includes two one-way site entrances and exits from the east and west bound streets bordering the property. The first level functions are limited to the main and emergency entrances, imaging suite and building support services with the balance of the street level area used for covered parking for 25 vehicles. The remaining patient care areas, dining, family zones and administrative offices are elevated to the second and third floors, providing dramatic vistas of the surrounding neighborhood and downtown Dallas. The exterior of the sleekly styled hospital is composed of sliver metal panels, multi-tone glass and precast concrete panel walls. The interior environment is much like that of a boutique hotel with floor-to-ceiling windows in all patient care and public areas.
Achieving Silver certification for a hospital under LEED 3.0 was quite an accomplishment. Page engineers did an outstanding job of energy modeling for the hospital. One of the challenges associated with Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1 involved modeling a system that was more complicated than the software would allow, while presenting it as clearly as possible for LEED review. There were also challenges related to indoor ventilation that required complex adjustments of air balances and minimum airflow settings.
