Project Description

The energy efficient Lanier High School theater expansion project for Austin Independent School District includes one and two story additions for a total of 14,300 SF of new program and support space. The project expanded the capacity of the theater from 263 to 506 seats and provided new plumbing, mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems throughout. The expansion included a new lobby, auditorium and expanded backstage support areas. A 2,500 square foot black box classroom was also be provided with script library and prop storage support spaces included.

This project was designed to achieve a two star rating from Austin Energy’s Green Building Program. Daylighting is provided in the lobby through a two-story space with a glazed curtain wall system on three sides. A metal mesh screen system and generous building overhangs shade this window system from direct sunlight.

The building design includes burnished block, cast stone sills, a facebrick veneer and barrel vault metal roof to closely match the existing building, while deviating enough to provide the building with its own unique appearance.
