Born in New Jersey but raised in the suburbs of Washington D.C., John Salmons is a son of a military family. He was happy to put roots down in the U.S. Capital, receiving his undergraduate degree in Architecture and Planning at Catholic University and a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design from Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Campus.
Growing up in the nation’s capital definitely has had a distinctive impact on the types of projects John has gotten to work on. Working at Page, the phrase ‘local clients’ has a very broad meaning. He has been involved with varied project types, ranging from commercial projects such as automotive dealerships to institutional projects for clients such as the U.S. Department of State.
A recent example of a commercial project that John is proud of includes an extensive building rehabilitation for a regional car dealer in the D.C. area. The project team was challenged with turning a small 1970’s showroom and service center into a contemporary dealership. The rehabilitation included excessive structural reinforcement and a rebranding package, which involved updating the building facade. To accommodate the anticipated uptick in car sales, a large workshop addition was also part of the scope.
John currently resides in Alexandria, VA with his wife Remy and their dog, Pluto. During the weekends and off hours from work they enjoy volunteering at Canstruction, a local food bank. John’s work at this food bank further stimulates his creative side by allowing him to design elaborate structures out of canned food. At the end of the challenges, the food is donated back to the community.
