Walnut Hill Medical Center Opens in Dallas

The newly opened Walnut Hill Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, is already receiving local and national attention for its focus on the patient experience. D Magazine, Dallas Business Journal and Forbes have all recently profiled the 200,000-square-foot hospital, which Forbes calls "the hospital that Steve Jobs would have built."

The 1980s-era, eight-story office building was gutted, renovated and repurposed as a new, state-of-the-art hospital. The open design incorporates large windows throughout the facility— including in the ICU and cardiac care units — which bring in abundant natural light and provide patients, families, staff and visitors views of the surrounding parks and neighborhood. The interior environment is further enhanced with warm woods and earth tones. 

Carmine Gallo, author of the Forbes article as well as the book, The Apple Experience: Secrets to Building Insanely Great Customer Loyalty, notes that Walnut Hill took several lessons from the Steve Jobs "playbook," including looking outside of your industry for inspiration, leveraging mobile technologies and designing spaces to make people feel better.

Amenities include valet parking, concierge service, a theater, business center, gift shop, dining, quiet waiting spaces and a coffee bar. State of the art technology for caregivers, patients and their families will be incorporated into the facility.

The hospital includes 84 private patient suites, a 16-bed ICU / CCU, a 10-bed emergency department, six operating suites, a cardiovascular operating room and five cardiovascular suites, including an open heart OR and a hybrid suite. The hybrid operating room serves a dual purpose as an education tool, enabling cardiac surgeons to communicate with other hospitals and students in classrooms across the country.
