VA Primary Care Facility Achieves LEED Silver Certification

Page is pleased to announce that the Veterans Affairs (VA) Primary Care Facility in Birmingham, AL, has achieved LEED Silver certification. The designation was awarded for the level of sustainability in the design such as careful orientation of the clinic and related parking garage to optimize daylighting and shading. A courtyard between the two structures serves as both a compass for visitors and a quiet healing garden. The project contractor was B.L. Harbert International with whom Page has successfully collaborated on other LEED-certified facilities.

Page designed this three story 68,000-square-foot Primary Care Annex to provide non-critical primary care to Alabama Veterans. It houses ambulatory care, a pharmacy, radiology, physical therapy, audiology, prosthetics and a blood draw lab.

The facility is uniquely connected to its surroundings with an efficient layout, and acts as a positive and therapeutic environment for the patients it serves. The three-story makes a visual statement that embodies its function as a build-to-suit modern medical facility.

The Primary Care Annex is sited on the north part of the site, the flatter part of the site, to facilitate easy service access with a level loading dock off 7th Avenue. Consequently, the 2,300-car parking garage is located on the south of the site, its lower two levels buried below street level, resulting in the lower bulk of the eight-story garage on University Boulevard.
