UT Regents Approve Designs for First Phase of Dell Medical School

The Board of Regents for the University of Texas System has recently approved designs for the first phase of the Dell Medical School in the Medical District on the Austin campus. Page is proud to be a design partner on all University of Texas buildings being planned for the district.

Page, in association with ZGF, will design the 260,000-square-foot Research Building, the 233,000-square-foot Medical Office Building 1 and the 1,120-vehicle structured parking garage. The eight-story research building will house 97,000 square feet of laboratory space, a 20,000-square-foot vivarium with expansion capabilities and 15,000 square feet of core labs.  The 10-story Medical Office Building 1 will be connected to the Research Building via a five-level “dry lab,” enabling collaboration and translational research among medical professionals and clinical researchers.

The Page / SLAM Architects team was selected to design the 85,000-square-foot Education and Administration Building. As part of that project, a 7,000-square-foot renovation to the School of Nursing Building will provide simulation laboratory space to serve the entire medical district.

"The medical district opens a new chapter in the development of the extraordinary campus of the University of Texas at Austin,” says Page Senior Principal Larry Speck.  “The new buildings will be an identifiable extension of the larger campus, but with a distinct character of their own that will speak to medical education in the 21st century.  Centered on a beautifully refurbished Waller Creek landscape, the district will have a series of wonderful public spaces with great, old live oak trees and lively places for student and faculty interaction."

Bounded by Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Interstate Highway 35, 15th Street, and Trinity Street, the medical district was first identified in The University of Texas at Austin Campus Master Plan and was later confirmed in the recent Medical District Master Plan created by Page and Sasaki Associates. Of significance is the immediate adjacency of the proposed medical district to the existing University Medical Center Brackenridge, specifically because of the substantial investment in facilities in the Medical Center, which will continue to serve a new teaching hospital being planned.

The medical district is being developed as a partnership between UT Austin, Seton Healthcare and Central Texas Healthcare. The vision for the district focuses on medical education that integrates healthcare, teaching, and research within an interdisciplinary setting, taking full advantage of adjacent university resources.

Construction on the first phase will begin in March 2014, and is expected to be completed in June 2016.
