UT Press announces Texas book series

Page's Senior Principal Lawrence W. Speck will be publishing a book within a University of Texas publishing project that will cover the history of Texas through several different topics. The American-Statesman further discuss the publishing project that Speck will be involved in.

The University of Texas Press announced today an ambitious publishing project that will examine the culture and history of Texas, beginning with a full-length history written by Austin's Stephen Harrigan and continuing with 15 more books on various topics such as politics, music, film, business, architecture, music and sports. A companion website will be launched in 2017, the university press said. The project will be called the Texas Bookshelf.

Harrigan, the author of such novels as "The Gates of the Alamo" and "Remember Ben Clayton" and a faculty member at the Michener Center for Writers, said in a press release that he's excited about the project because "it offers to tell the story of Texas as one enthralling, seamless narrative, the epic chronicle of a place and of the ceaseless attempts by many different sorts of people to claim it. My goal is to make the events of the modern history of Texas -- the Kennedy assassination, the moon landing, the collapse of Enron -- as compelling to read about as the siege of the Alamo or the Comanche wars."

University of Texas President Bill Powers added: "Texas deserves a comprehensive series of books that explores its history and culture. A collaboration between our esteemed faculty and UT Press is the ideal way to produce the Texas Bookshelf and to share the rich resources of this campus with the rest of the world."
