The Cistern Honored with TxA Design Award

The Texas Society of Architects (TxA) has honored The Cistern with a 2017 Design Award. Published in the September/October issue of Texas Architect Magazine, author Jesse Hager describes the formerly abandoned reservoir’s transformation into an accessible space housing art installations and the jury’s reaction to it:

Inside the Cistern, six inches of recirculating water reflect a small forest of 221 columns. Page inserted a six-ft-wide walkway around the periphery of the cavernous space, illuminated by subtle, linear lighting introduced near knee height. “What a simple way to actually create this extraordinary experience,” says juror Julie Snow, FAIA.

As part of Houston’s Buffalo Bayou Park, The Cistern has attracted visitors from all over the world. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership is actively engaging in the post-Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts and expects The Cistern to reopen soon. Page designed all of the pavilions at the park to withstand dramatic flooding, and the structures proved their resiliency through this unprecedented storm.
