The Architect's Newspaper Awards: Best of Design

The Architect's Newspaper is one of the most authoritative voices on architecture and design in the United States with several regional editions as well as a national one. For the past several years, they have held a Best of Design awards competition featuring 26 categories. Winning projects are selected for their innovation, creative use of new technology, sustainability, strength of presentation, and of course – design. Page is honored to have a winner and three honorable mentions in the 2016 Best of Design competition.

The Architecture of Buffalo Bayou Park project is the winner of the Civic Institution category. It is an urban transformation of the most visible portion of Houston’s most significant waterway, connecting downtown Houston with “shoulder” neighborhoods. Page is the architect for the buildings and pavilions in the 2.3-mile, 160-acre park, which was planned and designed by landscape architecture firm, SWA Group. The architectural vocabulary visually connects the park from end to end and allows the structures to serve as both landmarks and destinations.

One of the features of Buffalo Bayou Park is an Honorable Mention winner on its own in the Adaptive Restoration category. The Cistern was a once-defunct historical utility until the non-profit Buffalo Bayou Partnership saw its potential and had Page adapt it to become a destination that also can accommodate installation art, particularly light and sound. This awe-inspiring space was never intended to accommodate visitors so Page made it accessible and comfortable while preserving the original architecture.

In the Analog category, the Pierce Sky Park concept was an Honorable Mention winner as well. It is being promoted through hand-drawn renderings of a transformed section of Houston’s elevated freeway that The Architect’s Newspaper called “a strategic choice to generate interest and dialogue in the project”.

A Page Housing/Hospitality collaboration with Furman + Keil Architects, 2902 at the W Residences, was an Honorable Mention winner in the Interior Residential category. The jury commented on the series of intimate spaces that flow into one another with a pared-down aesthetic, muted tones and luxurious materials.
