Students Celebrate Opening of New High School
A replacement high school in northeast Houston has just opened and a videographer was on hand to capture the students’ reactions. Darryl Henson, Principal of North Forest High School in Houston Independent School District, led them into their new academic home explaining that it had been built “just for them, for their minds and their future.”
Page’s design team, which included expertise from DLR Group, intended that students and their families should have a sense of ownership in the new school. They met monthly with a small parent/teacher/student group as well as the full PTO to share progress and gain feedback on the evolving design. One excited student exclaimed, “This looks more like a college!”
The design incorporates 21st-century educational principles to encourage student-centered learning, which includes common learning areas. Classrooms also can be joined together for collaboration. Alumnus Zano Bailey, Class of 1990, was present for the event and called the new facility an "improvement in the community".
