Shaping National Electrical Codes

Page Principal Freddy Padilla has joined the ASHRAE 90.4 ELC sub-committee. “I am excited to be discussing and shaping codes that regulate our profession and the building industry,” says Freddy. “It is a great opportunity and I look forward to working with the group.” The group will focus on national electrical regulations as they relate to energy standards for data centers.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 90.4-2016, Energy Standard for Data Centers, establishes the minimum energy efficiency requirements of data centers for design and construction, for creation of a plan for operation and maintenance and for utilization of on-site or off-site renewable energy resources.

Page Principal Andy Baxter serves on the Standards Committee – SSPC 90.4 - Energy Standard for Data Centers and Telecommunications Buildings. Andy notes that the group is working toward trying to get the standard more widely adopted by jurisdictions and government agencies so it can be used for data center designs in lieu of the older 90.1 standard.

ASHREA emphasizes that the ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 90.4-2016 relies on a performance based approach that is more flexible and accommodating of innovative changes that rapidly occur in design, construction and operations in that industry. Organizational leaders have encouraged industry input as the standard has moved forward.
