Promoting the Living Community Challenge

Page Principal Barbara Maloney joins client San Francisco State University at the SCUP (Society for College and University Planning) 2019 Annual Conference to discuss the master plan for SF State’s Romberg Tiburon Campus, which is using the Living Community Challenge framework to guide future growth.

The education and research campus’ mission is to enhance public and student engagement with estuary and ocean science and develop solutions to the environmental problems confronting coastal communities. Its location on the San Francisco Bay provides the ideal gateway for scientific study of coastal ecosystems. The site is also a former military base with a mix of buildings from different eras of development.

Sponsored by the International Living Future Institute, the Living Community Challenge is a strong tool for campus master planning and this session illustrates how SF State is addressing issues of energy and water efficiency, decarbonization, biophilic environments, historic preservation, mobility and equity.

The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) unites college and professional planners.
