Page Welcomes...

Page welcomes Barbara Maloney, Principal, who will be a leader at the firm’s new office in San Francisco. Barbara is a co-founder of BMS Design Group, a San Francisco-based planning, urban design and landscape firm which has recently merged with Page. Her career as an urban designer and planner has been particularly focused on improving communities to support healthy and diverse lifestyles. Her work has addressed the relationship between land use and transportation, transit facilities, pedestrian and bicycle connectivity; environmental resource conservation, smart growth and sustainable design; and community character and identity.

Barbara specializes in complex and challenging urban development and campus planning projects that require effective management of large, multidisciplinary consulting teams. In her four decades of practice, Barbara has prepared master plans for private and public institutions of higher education, including many University of California (UC) campuses such as San Diego, Merced, Santa Cruz, Davis, Riverside and Santa Barbara; medical education, research and clinical campuses for UC San Francisco and UC Davis; and research campuses such as for UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She has also worked with community colleges as well as private institutions such as Santa Clara University, Carnegie Mellon University; and Stanford University.

She also has a wide range of experience in urban design, community planning and transportation-related urban design projects in communities throughout the U.S. In California alone, some of her notable - and award-winning - work includes the San Francisco Transbay Redevelopment Area Design, the Downtown San Leandro Transit-Oriented Development Strategy and the Macdonald Avenue Economic Revitalization Plan in Richmond.

Barbara explains that she shares a common value with Page in her commitment to collaboration. “From my first job at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill right out of graduate school, I have been fortunate to work at interdisciplinary firms that engaged in planning as well as design.  As a consequence, this has influenced and supported my own interest in collaboration and in seeing the interrelationships among the land, buildings, and the natural and developed landscape. This experience has directly influenced my commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.”

She actively promotes her profession and shares her expertise through involvement with a number of industry associations. Barbara is a National Council member of SCUP (Society for College and University Planning), APA (American Planning Association) and AIA (American Institute of Architects) and also has served on design review boards for institutions and agencies including UC Berkeley, UC Merced and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC).

In 1998, Barbara co-founded BMS Design Group with former Page Principal Emeritus Michael Smiley after twenty years of management experience with large, national planning and design firms such as EDAW, Inc. and Wallace Roberts & Todd. In those roles, she led planning and design projects in the western U.S. and Asia. She received her Masters in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.

Barbara will assist in integrating the San Francisco office of BMS Design Group into Page, with the goal of advancing urban design, planning and landscape architectural services in all Page offices across the United States. We are proud to welcome Barbara Maloney to Page.
