Page Honored with Multiple AIA Houston 2016 Design Awards

Several Page projects were just honored with 2016 AIA Houston Design Awards. The ceremony was held on August 26, 2017 at the Page-designed TDECU Football Stadium, a previous AIA Houston Design Award winning project. The jury included Neil Denari of Los Angeles-based NMDA, Rand Elliot of Elliot + Associates Architects in Oklahoma City, and Editor-in-Chief of Metropolis Magazine Susan Szenasy.

Our projects were recognized in a variety of categories but largely centered on our civic work that makes lives better. Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park, a 2.3-mile long urban park, was honored with three awards, two of which were given to Page. The Page-designed architecture of Buffalo Bayou Park won in the 50,000 sf or under category, and the Cistern at Buffalo Bayou Park was recognized in the Renovation/Repurpose category. A third award in the Urban Design category was given to SWA Group.

Page congratulates the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and planners and landscape architects, SWA Group. We were proud to collaborate with them by designing the built structures in the park to feel like natural extensions of the landscape.

The multiple Page-designed buildings anchor the ends of the park and mark points along its numerous pathways. The buildings are designed with a similar architectural vocabulary of long thin volumes made of board-formed concrete and marked by deep eaves clad in wood slats. They all capture great vistas of the park and Houston skyline and lie amiably and naturally in the topography.

The recently re-discovered Cistern is the City of Houston’s original underground drinking-water reservoir. Located at the eastern end of the park, it now has a new accessible entrance, and a walkway winds around the interior perimeter of the 87,500-square-foot expanse, giving visitors a view of the rows of 25-foot tall concrete columns which stand in two inches of reflective water on the reservoir’s floor. The Cistern opened to wild success in mid-2016. 

The AIA Houston Design Award jury also honored our New Process Steel Headquarters in the Renovation/Repurpose category. The project transformed an existing metal warehouse into a sophisticated workplace for the local carbon steel processing and manufacturing company. The design captures the industrial heritage of the company with its facades clad with translucent Kalwall panels and taut metal skin, which transitions from solid to perforated panels. The 30,200-square-foot office space interior is designed with a modern aesthetic, clean lines and the use of natural materials to add warmth to the space. Numerous daylighting strategies provide natural light throughout the spaces.
