Page Aviation Project Wins National Design-Build Award

The award-winning design-build team of Page and Hensel Phelps has been honored yet again with a national award of merit in the Aviation category. Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) has tapped the Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) Terminal East Infill project to receive a 2018 award, citing the delivery solution the team developed to address the client's challenge. Page and Hensel Phelps have worked together for over 28 years forming the synergy required to deliver successful projects with outstanding designs.

Challenges started from the inception of the project with the underground utilities that fed the existing facility. The entire airport’s hydronic piping (heating and chilled water), fire water and domestic water supply lines ran through the center of the project’s foundations. The project team relocated these systems within the perimeter of the footprint of the Terminal East Infill facility prior to construction around them. This had to be performed with skillful precision to eliminate the impact this enabling effort would cause if not executed successfully.

The design-build delivery method requires a strong team dynamic, which can mean the difference between successful delivery or failure. According to DBIA, the ABIA Terminal East Infill team excelled in every way on the project producing a building that overcame challenges, showed management excellence, innovation and state-of-the-art technologies, was sensitive to the environment, contributed to the greater Austin community and provided a high level of client service.

The project added 55,000 square feet to ABIA, reshaping the entrance to the airport with a multi-story, windowed and colorful terminal adjacent to much of the pedestrian area of the airport. A new passenger security screening checkpoint with eight lanes is expandable up to ten and a larger customs area was designed with the latest standards.

Additional team members included specialty contractor BNP Associates and Architectural Engineers Collaborative, which served as the structural engineers. Congratulations to the client and project team on yet another recognition of this very successful project.
