Operational Wellness

The newly-opened Quarry Run Regional Operations Center has been the subject of attention for some time. The first-responder facility serves multiple counties, some of which are the fastest growing in the US. Its state of the art emergency and network operations, public safety answering point (PSAP), data centers and hardened core were featured on tour during the recent NENA (National Emergency Number Association) Annual Conference in nearby San Antonio. Now, BD+C Magazine (Building Design + Construction) has run an extensive article on the facility design and how it will benefit surrounding communities.

The project is an example of integrated architectural and engineering design from the first day. The benefit of this process allowed the engineers to respond to the spaces when designing the systems and to work with the architecture team in advance to accommodate their needs. As Page Principal Freddy Padilla described it, “The architecture supports the engineering which in turn supports the architecture.”

From the street, the resulting facility looks like a high-end corporate building and the attractive fence surrounding it belies the extent of security in place. Inside, daylighting and high air quality are integral parts of the design intent to maintain occupant wellness in very stressful jobs.
