New National Reference Lab Coming Soon

Barbados is receiving a new national medical reference laboratory, and Principals and Senior Lab Planners Chris Cowansage and Malena Aquino, along with Associate Principal and Architect Lou Krupnick traveled there to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.

The new construction will incorporate Public Health, Leptospira and Ladymeade Reference Unit Laboratories, and it will be located across the street from a hospital. The Minister of Health John Boyce, United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Dr. Larry Palmer and representatives from the CDC and the Department of State were also in attendance to celebrate the start of the $9 million project.

The facility is expected to be completed within 16 months. Boyce said “Possession of such capability provides the foundation for a better quality of life, enabling societies to achieve their goals and enabling people to contribute to national development,” according to the Barbados Today, a local online news resource. The facility is a joint initiative of the US Department of State (PEPFAR program), Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Barbados Ministry of Health, and it is expected to be completed within 16 months.

Page/SST Planners provided lab planning services for the building which was designed by Lou Krupnick when he was with Swanke Hayden Connell Architects.
