New Five-Star Hotel Opens in Ghana

Visitors to West Africa now have new luxury accommodations to consider when they travel to the capital city of Ghana. The Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra opened its doors to guests on November 1, 2015. The five-star hotel, designed by Page in association with Looney & Associates and MESA, is the largest in the city with 269 guest rooms, including 22 luxury suites and two presidential suites.

Located in close proximity to the State House, the Accra International Conference Centre and the National Theatre, the hotel is located on the site of a former racetrack and is the first phase of the Gold Coast City Master Plan also created by Page. The design of the hotel was based on the compound houses of Ghana and other western African countries which have existed in West Africa for centuries. The central courtyard provides a quiet refuge from the busy city allowing guests to eat, drink or simply relax under the shade of a cedar grove. The pool deck, located one floor above, provides stunning views of the planned Gold Coast City, Independence Arch and Square, as well as the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to enjoying the pool, hotel guests or residents of Accra can eat at the Papillon Restaurant, or attend an event hosted at the Cedar Terrace.

Project amenities include a main restaurant, two specialty restaurants, café, food preparation and support spaces; a conferencing facility which includes a main ballroom, multiple conference rooms, breakout and support spaces; a spa; fitness facility; night club; and other administrative, storage, receiving, staff locker and dining, and associated support spaces typical for hotel operations.  Site amenities include an outdoor pool; tennis court; landscaped courtyard; private bus and taxi loading areas and automobile parking.  The hotel includes onsite water treatment and stand-by generators to provide three days of water and power to the hotel.

As part of the Gold Coast City Master Plan, a retail mall is being constructed across the street from the hotel. A parking garage will be on the first level of the structure, while the top three levels of the building will include high-end retail and a food court with views toward the Atlantic.

Page provided master planning, architecture and MEP engineering for the project. Dallas, Texas-based Looney & Associates provided interior design services for the hotel, which was constructed by Zakhem International Construction Ltd., and MESA provided landscape design services
