National Recognition for Transformative Design
The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) has recognized two collaborative Page projects with Design Awards of Honor Awards, choosing them from submissions across the country. Page is proud to be represented among winners of this national annual award competition yet again.
Buffalo Bayou Park and The University of Texas at Austin Medical District Master Plan are two very different projects that make lives better for their users. The former is an urban park on the edge of downtown Houston that has transformed the area, attracting businesses, residential development and improving the desirability of the area. The latter created the framework for a partnership that has successfully implemented early phases of a medical school that is providing education through innovative methods and offering care for the community.
At the awards ceremony, the emcee shared that the jurors liked “the scale and the materiality of” the transformation of the section of the meandering waterway by restoring the natural landscape and creating architecture indicative of a landmark building. They noted how successfully the master plan by SWA Group and design of the built architecture by Page have resonated with the community, saying “this fun project invites you “in”!”
Additionally, the jurors were impressed with the resilient design of the built structures to withstand flooding. For more information about Buffalo Bayou Park, click here.
Jurors celebrated the medical district master plan described as a transformation of a 28-block area in central Austin from a motley collection of parking lots and stand-alone structures into a lively, health-oriented community that focuses on a prominent greenbelt and blurs the boundary between town and gown. The jury felt the plan had “a strong, cohesive concept.” The project team included Sasaki and Page.
The vision for the district focuses on medical education that integrates healthcare, teaching and research within an interdisciplinary setting, taking full advantage of adjacent university resources.
