Master Planner, Landscape Architect Honored

Louisiana State University (LSU) has a tradition of graduating students who go on to achieve national and international prominence. One such alumnus is Page Urban Design Director Lewis May, FASLA, who has just been inducted into the LSU Alumni Association Hall of Distinction. In their introduction, LSU explained that Lewis has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects at the Kennedy Center in Washington as “one of the outstanding landscape architects and planners in America.”

In his five-decade career, he has earned nearly 200 international awards of excellence for his global designs in which millions of people live today. Lewis also authored three award‐winning books related to environmental design. It was during his years at LSU that Lewis began to understand the purpose of his education and the impact he could have on the future of the built environment. His belief that we all share responsibility for the ecology of our planet has remained a keystone of his career. 

Lewis has paid it forward through teaching positions at the University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and the Centre d’etude d’architecture et urbanisme in Santés, France. He also has lectured at colleges and universities on planning, architecture, urban design and landscape architecture in the United States, Latin America and Europe, including Louisiana State University. Lewis serves on the board of the Jeffersonian Institute where he continues his advocacy for community health, education, and the environment.
