Historic Downtown Building Update Connecting Tradition with Today

The Houston Chronicle reports on a high-profile historic commercial building that Page is updating in the heart of downtown. The 1927 Esperson building is already in a desirable location due to job growth in the area and a new light rail line being constructed along one side of it. Just as important as the updates its lobby and office spaces are receiving is the improved portal access to downtown Houston's six-plus mile long tunnel system. This climate controlled destination is filled with restaurants, retail and service providers.

A two-story tall art wall will rise from the tunnel into the lobby. Its distinctive design is intended to become a landmark for downtown workers. Robert Owens, associate principal at Page, explains one element of the vision is for people to suggest meeting at the Esperson art wall before setting out for their final tunnel destination together. The Esperson project and related improvements are maintaining pieces of Houston's history while updating its functionality.
