Harris Center for Mental Health Celebrates its New Home

The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD (formerly known as MHMRA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary of serving the men, women, children and seniors of Harris County including under-served populations. In partnership with advocacy groups, non-profit groups, healthcare organizations and city agencies, the Center's more than two thousand care providers develop customized services in order to achieve optimal results. The Center is the largest in the state of Texas catering to one of the fastest growing counties. Their services address a wide range of mental health issues from alcohol and chemical dependency to depression, cerebral palsy and autism.

The wonderful autumn weather on Saturday, October 17th, set the stage for the ribbon cutting and dedication of their new facilities. Dr. Steven Schnee, Executive Director of the Harris Center, delivered the opening remarks to the community with several public officials in attendance. When it comes to tackling the mental health challenges in our community, Dr. Schnee says, "It is all about collaboration when it comes to our work." He attributes the success and growth of the center to the dedicated staff and is proud to lead an organization of "People serving people".

The program of festivities included testimonials from caregivers and their patients and a rousing performance by the Texas Home Living Choir of Uptown Funk and a touching rendition of "I Believe I Can Fly". Following the program, visitors and guest were given tours of the building.

In 2014, the Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD acquired the 12-story building at 9401 Southwest freeway for a much needed expansion of their facilities to accommodate the growth in its consumer base and in services provided. Page was selected by the agency to develop the design for the interior buildout, which includes four floors of clinic space, a pharmacy, a 24-hour service hotline call center and administrative offices. The new treatment areas provide a clean, warm and secure environment for both patients and caregivers. The exterior envelope of the building was cleaned, sealed and painted, breathing new life into a structure that had stood empty for a long time.
