Groundbreaking of Veteran Medical Housing Project

This week, Veterans Affairs administrators, legislators and other dignitaries turned shovelfuls of dirt to mark the groundbreaking of a new bed tower, a four story building that will add 96 medical-surgical single-patient rooms and 40 intensive care unit beds to the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, FL. It will also include space for a new cafeteria, outdoor dining area and retail store, as well as assorted support offices. This effort marked a larger step forward for veteran health care in the US as the project is the first major design-build construction project managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Veterans Administration under recently approved Congressional legislation.

The James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.

Page is partnering on the new bed tower with Turner Construction Company, with whom the firm also has worked on other VA projects including the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic which was the largest in the US at the time of opening. Page has consistently been ranked one of the top Veterans Administration Facilities architecture firms in the US on an annual basis.
