Design for Medical School Wins Materials Award
Page is proud to be selected for the 2018 National Tucker Design Award for its design of The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin Health Learning Building in the category of Best Architectural Design Using Natural Stone. Page Project Architect Josh Coleman accepted the award Sunday evening at the ceremony in San Antonio on behalf of the project team, including the materials supplier Continental Cut Stone.
Continental Cut Stone captured Page Design Principal Larry Speck on camera about the significance of this award. He is very proud of Page's record with several previous wins of this award, calling it the epitome of the relationship Page has with Continental Cut Stone.
Larry noted that Austin is in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, which boasts an underground natural resource of limestone, a boon to architects practicing in the region. Yet the challenge is to use the material in new and fresh ways. While technology was woven into every element of the building, of particular focus were the limestone facades and interior walls. More than 10,000 individual custom shaped stones make up these walls. Larry explained that each unit was cut by a CNC automated milling machine the workers affectionately called “Elvis, because it's such a rock star.” To hear what Larry has to say about the award and digital fabrication process, watch the Continental Cut Stone video below or here:
Initiated by Building Stone Institute in 1977, the Tucker Design Awards are recognized as one of the most prestigious architectural design awards in the country. Tucker Design Awards honor those who have achieved excellence in design through the incorporation and use of natural stone in building or landscape projects. Tucker Design Awards are presented biennially.
