Community First! Village Construction Underway in East Travis County

The construction for Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ Community First! Village, a 27-acre master-planned community that will provide housing for the homeless in central Texas, is underway. The first residents are expected to move into their new affordable and sustainable homes, including Page’s tiny house design called “A Porch with a Home”, in the fall of 2015.

The site is located in east Austin, where staff, volunteers and top construction companies are continuously showing up to offer their help despite the summer heat. In a recent article on TWC News, Drew King of Mobile Loaves and Fishes said, "It's hot out here, but they are coming out with smiles on their faces and putting up homes quickly and beautifully, and they are going to change the world."

Mobile Loaves & Fishes has successfully lifted 99 disabled, chronically homeless neighbors into housing in the past 9 years, according to their website. Now, they plan to provide housing for approximately 200 homeless men and women with this program.

To date, six builders have signed up to participate in this project, including Risinger Homes, Hoar Construction and JGB Custom Homes which are constructing the Page designs. They are erecting the “skeleton” of the porches, which will provide a floor, roof, and columns, and allow for a wide variety of future attachment methods for customization. Once Mobile Loaves and Fishes selects residents, each will then have the opportunity to customize his or her home’s porch.

A homes tour event at Community First! Village is planned for late October and residents will begin to move in around that time. Electric service will have been activated and communal laundry, bathroom, and kitchen facilities will be ready for use then.
