AIA Practice: Work Flows

International practice is an attractive concept to architects around the world, but it isn't always easily accomplished. James Wright, principal at PageSoutherlandPage and a member of the AIA International Committee Advisory Group, has worked with representatives of the US Commerce Department to help address some of those issues.

Architect Magazine interviewed James and several other industry representatives on the trade barriers that potentially keep some professionals from sharing their expertise outside their own country. The American Institute of Architects and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture both weighed in.

James noted that Americans seeking work abroad face significant hurdles such as laws, which differ from country to country in terms of licensing, taxation, and contracts. To help overcome this, he invited representatives from the Commerce Department to address some of these issues in “Moving to an International Practice,” a session he’s co-chairing at the 2013 AIA National Convention in Denver in June.
