2014 Texas Design Conference

The Texas Society of Architects has recapped the 2014 Design Conference themed "Borderlands" for those unable to be in Austin the weekend of January 31-February 2. Architects from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mexico attended presentations and tours in between stimulating conversation among their peers.

One highlight was a tour of the 130-year old campus led by former University of Texas - Austin Dean of the School of Architecture, current architecture professor and Page senior principal Larry Speck, FAIA. As a member of the current Dell Medical School at the University of Texas design team, Speck is in a unique position to explain how the university's history informs its master plan design currently under implementation.

Throughout the weekend, the immense importance of “Borderlands” became clear. The vital role that practitioners within the surrounding states and sovereign nation bordering Texas, along with the projects located in these unique environments, make for responsive, vibrant communities and inspiring designs. As Legorreta said: “We need to need to know more about each other. Learning about what other architects are doing across [Texas’] borders is something that should be known.”
